Agrigento is a city that blends history, culture, nature, and gastronomy. With a three-day stay, you can immerse yourself in its archaeological treasures, explore its natural beauties, and savor typical Sicilian dishes. Here’s an itinerary that will allow you to discover the best of Agrigento, day by day, with suggestions for dinner and evening activities.

Day 1: Immersion in History and Culture

Morning:

Valley of the Temples in Agrigento: Start your adventure in Agrigento by visiting the famous Valley of the Temples, one of the most important archaeological sites in Sicily. Take the time to admire the Temple of Concordia, one of the best-preserved temples in the Greek world. Continue with the Temple of Juno, which offers a stunning panoramic view of the Valley, and the Temple of Hercules. If you have time, you can also visit the Archaeological Museum of Agrigento, which houses numerous historical artifacts from the region.

Afternoon:

Kolymbethra Garden: After visiting the Valley, head to the Kolymbethra Garden, a green oasis in the heart of the Valley of the Temples. Here, you can take a walk surrounded by nature, among centuries-old trees and Mediterranean plants, and relax with an incredible view.

Stroll through Agrigento’s Historic Center: After visiting the Valley, continue with a walk through the city’s historic center. Explore Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the vibrant heart of Agrigento, with its typical shops and charming squares. Visit the Church of Santa Maria dei Greci, an ancient Greek temple transformed into a church, and the Monastery of Santo Spirito, rich in medieval frescoes.

Dinner:

A fresh seafood restaurant, with a view of the Valley of the Temples and a nice glass of wine from the Agrigento wineries. There are several restaurants offering views of the Valley, which, in the evening, offer a truly poetic image, almost suspended in the air, thanks to the lighting.

Day 2: Nature and Sicilian Beaches

Morning:

Scala dei Turchi: Start your day by visiting one of Sicily’s most iconic natural wonders, the Scala dei Turchi. This white limestone cliff is famous for its sculptural shapes and breathtaking views of the sea. You can walk on the rock and take unforgettable panoramic photos.

Eraclea Minoa: After Scala dei Turchi, head to Eraclea Minoa, an archaeological site located in a beautiful natural area. Here, you will find the remains of an ancient Greek city, including a theater overlooking the sea. You can take a walk among the ruins and discover the history of this fascinating site.

Afternoon:

San Leone Beach: In the afternoon, relax at San Leone Beach, with golden sand and crystal-clear waters. If you enjoy water sports, you can also try windsurfing or kitesurfing. Alternatively, take a stroll along the seafront or enjoy a drink at one of the typical beach bars and kiosks by the sea.

Dinner:

Feast on seafood. In the Porto Empedocle area, you will find typical restaurants offering full menus with plenty of seafood in a totally informal and playful atmosphere. In our opinion, this is an experience not to be missed.

Day 3: Discover the City and Unique Experiences

Morning:

Luigi Pirandello Theatre and Via Atenea: Spend the morning exploring the Luigi Pirandello Theatre, where you can admire one of the most important historic buildings in Agrigento. The theater, named after the famous Sicilian playwright, is a symbol of the city and is worth a visit to appreciate its architecture and charm. Take a stroll along the historic Via Atenea, filled with shops and buildings rich in history.

Underground Agrigento: If you’re a history enthusiast, don’t miss a visit to Underground Agrigento, a fascinating tour that will take you through the city’s underground spaces, with caves and tunnels that tell the story of the city’s ancient life.

Afternoon:

Tour of Agrigento’s Historic Churches: In the afternoon, discover some of the most important and historic churches in the city.

Cathedral of San Gerlando: Start with the Cathedral of San Gerlando, a Norman church located in the heart of the historic center. The church is famous for its architecture and interior frescoes.

Santa Maria dei Greci: Continue with a visit to Santa Maria dei Greci, a church built on an ancient Greek temple, with a structure that combines medieval and ancient architectural elements.

Monastery of Santo Spirito: End the tour with a visit to the Monastery of Santo Spirito, which houses a church with beautiful medieval frescoes and a mystical atmosphere, perfect for a moment of reflection and contemplation. During the tour, you’ll also explore other lesser-known but equally fascinating churches that tell the religious and cultural history of Agrigento.

Dinner:

End with a classy experience. There are several restaurants offering tasting menus with unique dishes that combine tradition and culinary innovation. If the budget allows, we recommend treating yourself to this experience.

General Tips for Your Stay:

Excursions: If you enjoy hiking, take an excursion along the Sentiero del Cervo in the Torre Salsa nature reserve, a protected area that offers spectacular natural landscapes and the chance to spot local wildlife.

Wine Tasting: Book a visit to local wineries to discover the fine Sicilian wines. The wineries offer tours with tastings that will allow you to savor the best wines from the region, including Nero d'Avola and Cerasuolo di Vittoria.

Try Local Food: You may have noticed we deliberately skipped lunch suggestions. For lunch, we recommend stopping at a rotisserie to try arancine (yes, we call them arancine here). Don’t forget to try caponata, pasta with sardines, and sarde a beccafico. If you're visiting in October or November, try the frutta di martorana and, in general, don't miss out on desserts, especially cannoli and cassata.

Nightlife: If you love nightlife, Agrigento will surprise you with parties, events, and music. In summer, the coastline fills with young people and events. Even in the winter months, you'll find plenty of activities in the city, especially on weekends.

Where to Stay: In the Heart of the City, Between Comfort and Relax

For a comfortable and central stay, we recommend La Dimora del Centro, located at Via Imera 18. Just 100 meters from the central Via Atenea and the main attractions of the city center, and only a few minutes from the Valley of the Temples. This property offers a refined environment with stylish furnishings, perfect for exploring the city in total comfort.

Agrigento is a city that will surprise you with its natural beauty and millennia-old history. With this itinerary, you'll have the chance to explore the city's main attractions, experience unique moments, and savor Sicilian cuisine. However, it would be ideal to have more time, as there’s so much to see, both in the city and in nearby towns rich in history and tradition. Have a great trip!
